Tasked to propose ideas to make ADM a friendlier and more welcoming environment, my journey began with a blank canvas - the walls. However, the walls were occupied with posters, advertisements and alot of clutter, so I decided to give it a facelift. What could organize this information mess yet enhance the space? Using optical illusion to create a play on perspectives, you see it yet you don't when the posters are either down or up. Cork was the main material used because of its lightweight and versatility in creating various forms. By applying 2D into 3D space, OptiCork has morphed and there is now a designated area for your pin-ups!

Design Brief:

An overcrowded table of books, magazines, snacks, mobile phone charger, tissue boxes, portable speakers, computer cables and peripherals is common sight among many busy individuals. This inevitably caused much inconvenience where space is of concern. One often resorts to ad hoc spot hopping within different parts of the table to maximize available real estate.

The computer is a valuable commodity in modern society and one relies heavily on it as a source for communication and entertainment. It has gained a substantial status and favored by many in the practice of personal rituals performed daily. As such, electricity needs to be conducted to various locations of the table where one temporary resides. Common peripherals such as speakers and portable hard disks that compliment the work or play processes also need to tap on it as well. However, messy cables of conventional multi-plugs are not only an eyesore, they also add unnecessary bulk and distractions to the workspace environment.

This proposal aims to resolve the ritual condition on an overly cluttered table, while facilitating the habit of ad hoc spot hopping through design. It will also address the need for electrical supply, as and where need, without adding to the disorder like those of conventional portable multi-plugs. Ideally, the quality of work or play performed as daily rituals should never be compromised, but enhanced.

Universal Multi-plug Shelving System:

This universal multi-plug shelving system uses the dead space below any flat standard worktable to supply standard electrical power as and where the rituals of work or play are performed. Each shelving unit is made up of a maximum of 2 railings, regardless of their distance apart. The portable multi-plug tray slides neatly between either variously positioned railings. Once firmly fastened, the proprietary connect attachment on each railing can supply electricity of up to 3 appliances via the universal plug sockets on the tray. The stretchable netting neatly stores excess cable wirings while keeping unsightly clutter at bay.

When not in use, the portable multi-plug tray can be 'powered down' simply by pulling it slightly outward to break the connection on the contact attachment, or be completely removed and kept away together with the unattached cables belonging to various appliances used. As such, each tray is customizable and organized accordingly to the nature of work or play by the different cables supplied. Minimizing the confusion and mess of assorted electrical cables lying around.

Design Brief:

A fraction of music lovers find the earphones a discomforting due to the close proximity of the sound emission. It is decidedly different to be able to play a musical instrument with and without the earphones. However, due to the patterns of modern living, many musically inclined people are finding it hard to practice their music. Many resort to practicing at night, which results in conflict with other people. Design a device that would enable to users to enjoy their music without intruding to others life.

Sound Dome:

This project initial began with an investigation of the rituals that were part of our everyday life. Hardly outstanding activities, but essential ones that mattered the most.

The findings were shared and each of us was assigned to improve another’s quality of life by impacting that one ritual that made the day brighter. Music turned out to be essential for quite a number of people. Sound dome is designed to bring the highest quality of surround sound to the user without physical contact like the earphones.

Most people already have earphones, but despite using earphones, a fraction of them would still prefer to go with the traditional speaker if given the choice. The sound dome can be wirelessly connected to any electrical device including musical instruments like the organ. Users can enjoy music the precisely way they like it even in the wee hours of the night.

Design Brief:

For many, exercise and music go hand in hand. While exercising, earphone users often find the wiring getting in the way and soaked in sweat, corroding the lining gradually. Existing earphones specially designed for sports leave users with no choice over what ear-phones to use, while themselves losing out in audio quality. An ideal solution is a design that coils and protects wiring to prolong the lifespan of earphones, while compatible with one's own generic earphones. Comfort and weight are also factors to consider.

Sound Dome:

The earphone coiler is designed for people who listen to music on the go, offering the user comfort, convenience, protection and flexibility. A silicon main body is structurally supported by an inner nylon frame, which provides strength to secure the coiler comfortably around the neck. Because the weight of the wiring is transferred onto the neck, the earphones no longer tug at the user's ears.

Coil nodes and wire slits on both sides pack and conceal wiring from the earphones, minimizing hassle from extra wiring. The wire slits also prevent sweat from corroding the earphone wiring. The storage compartment in the centre offers protection for the ear-phones when placed inside a bag and subjected to knocking against other items. This product is compatible with generic ear-phones, thus the user retains the option to alternate between preferred earphones.

Design Brief:

This project aims to bring out a way of communicating through objects we use on a daily basis. In today’s society, family members sometimes have busy schedules that do not allow for face to face communication and interaction. In addition, in an Asian society, family members tend to be more reserved in expressing their feelings for each another. Therefore communication tends to be done in more subtle ways, for example using the process of preparing food for loved ones as a way of expressing one’s concern and love for a family member. Food also plays an important role in communication and family life in Asian societies. For example, asking someone if they have eaten is a common greeting and the reunion dinner on the eve of Chinese New Year. The product could revolve around these ideas of communication through objects related to food.

Thermo-writing Food Storage Container:

The thermo writing food storage container has a thermo gel strip that reacts to changes in temperature. By taking the container out of the fridge, the thermo gel softens when heat is applied when the user’s finger touches the gel strip. This allows markings, and writings to be made on the gel strip. Placing the container back in the fridge thus causes these markings and writings on the gel strip to solidify, allowing them to stay on the surface of the container. This serves as a way of communication for the person who prepares the food and the person who consumes the food. The gel strip also acts as a label for the food container allowing the user to label the container proving information of the contents of the container and the expiry date of the contents. The gel strip also serves as a way of keeping the contents of the container cool while the container is removed from the fridge. The use of wood for the cover gives the product added character and also doubles up as a serving platter. The depression of the cover matches the bottom of the container allowing for ease of stacking. The shape of the base gives the product an added touch of interest by making the container seem as if it is floating.

Design Brief:

My client was Brian. His brief was to be notified of any available seat in the incoming train. He would like to rest and relax.

Thus, my interpretation of the brief- was to design a portable chair that is convenient and considerate to other users.

Chaffel:

This chair is incorporated into a bag - a duffel bag, to be well-hidden.

There are 5 steps to using this bag:

1) Open and the cover to reveal the trolley handle

2) Press the button to pull it.

3) While ya pulling - do remember to step wheel brakes at the back, if you are going to sit on it. Do step on the brakes again to unlock the wheels.

4) Once you reach the chair’s length - bend it down.

5) The seat is now available for you.

Design Brief:

To design an integrated organizing shelving system that would not only organize one's cosmetic products, as well as help user keep track of the time while putting on makeup. Thus it would consist of a visual time telling system to remind the user of the time. The product would also have individual shelving units so that user can customize the organizing system to help user remember more easily on where the cosmetic products are located. Compartments should come in various sizes to compromise a variety of small and large items.

LeShelf / LeCubes:

LeShelf is designed to help user organize cosmetic products as well as keeping track of the time while getting ready.

It comes with a separate individual shelving units that allow user to customize the organizing system to suit the storage of different cosmetic products.

Larger items such as hair dryer and hair straightener can be stored at the compartments at the top of LeCubes. There is also one small compartment to cater to small items such as keys.

LeCubes comes with an in-built digital clock and a LED light bar embedded in the mirror.The LED light bar would correspond to the passing of the minutes, thus making the passing of time more visual and visible. This serves as a reminder to user to quicken the process of getting ready so as not to be late for work or leisure.

LeCubes also has a inbuilt lighting system in which lights will be on when the mirror is slide opened.

Design Brief:

Over time, things we use and carry around tend to be are collected on our desk and usually forms a whole messy clutter within a short period of time. As these clutter accumulates, we tend to feel lazier and reluctant to pack up.

Due to it being a hassle it hard to slot out the mess, we lose track of where exactly we place our belongings and almost everything in the mess seems as important. It then became a daily ritual to “pick and go” in the morning as we grab whatever we see and rush off. Due to such a haphazard way of packing, we tend to realize that we actually forgot something that was buried under the whole clutter, especially the smaller objects such as thumbdrives etc.

Therefore, the main problems faced would be too much clutter on the table, causing small but crucial things to be hard to spot and tend to be overlooked when we are in a hurry.

Ante Shelf:

'Ante Shelf' allows the user to organize their belongings via the concept of 'PRlORlTlZlNG'. Similar to Contour Maps, Ante Shelf's compartments varies in depth according to importance. The Red compartment would be the deepest in depth and decreases in sequence, with the Dark Green Compartment being the shallowest. Ante Shelf also resembles an aerial view of a city, with numerous high-rise buildings and the user 'Building up their personal city of belongings' according to their priorities. From its side view, 'Ante Shelf' resembles a Bar graph, thus mapping out your priorities, with the highest containing items of your utmost importance.

'Ante Shelf' is fun and customizable. It comes in a full set of compartments, but the user decides how many compartment they wish to mount on the board, according to their needs. It is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. It keeps your items organized and also serves as a decoration with its unique compartment forms. With the strong grip from the rubber interiors of the compartments, there are no worries that your belongings would slip out.

Design Brief:

People, who live in a country which only has summer like Singapore, often get sweat very easily. Some of them don’t like the feeling with sweat on their body. They like taking shower very often. When facing this kind of situation, people needs a product can let them take shower more conveniently and can help save water as well. Because sometimes they do not use soap, just use water to wash away their sweat.

I came up an idea that to design a shower system which can make water reused and also can let people feel hot water to help wash away their sweat.

Room Shower System:

This is a product aiming for people who don’t like sweat and want to take shower often. It is designed based on the principle of easy use and keep.

The other purpose of this shower system is to save water. Therefore, people who just want to wash away sweat and feel some hot water can save more water to use this product.

This shower system can be put at a corner in a room. Its size is just a person’s fit. It will not be going to make up too much space. And it is very easy to use. It has advanced electronic press button to control everything. It has a screen to show temperature. You can use it very conveniently no matter you are in school hall or at home.

This shower system is designed based on working principle of Japan bamboo fountain. The water speed can be controlled. On one hand, it helps save water, and on the other hand it helps save your energy to control water when you are using soap.

The design of the water container can let you feel plenty water at the same time.

It is a good choice for people who take shower very often in one day.

Design Brief:

Design a product that will allow the client to sing confidently during all hours of the day. At present, the client will blast her music out loud from her laptop to prevent others from listening in to her singing voice hence causing disturbance to her neighbors. The idea is to design a furniture that can integrate a room within a room concept such that much of the sound that she makes would be muffled.

Sound Lounge redefines your lifestyle by giving you a private haven which you can call your own. Sound Lounge is able to block noise, giving user the peace and serenity. Sound Lounge is able to accommodate one's private singing party without causing much disturbance to others due to its double-walled structure and acoustic padding chair: The lounge chaise too can be change into different postures, thus accommodating to one's preference.
