In the perspective of improving Product Design students preparation, this course consists of short workshops and lectures dedicated to practical (skill based) topics in the current Design field. Under the coordination of a Full-Time Faculty member, faculty members and practicing designers from the local scene will be invited to ADM to share their techniques, ideas and their experience with students.


    Course Aims


  • To develop and demonstrate proficiency in visual thinking and visualization skills using manual sketching techniques
  • To develop and demonstrate proficiency in model making and finishing techniques to support all levels of the design process
  • To develop and demonstrate proficiency in producing presentations, making color selections and applying physical ergonomics methodologies


Teaching Methods

 

Throughout the module, students will be exposed to a range of teaching methods and learning activities that consist of:

 

  1. Lectures to provide students with an understanding of fundamental ideas
  2. Individual learning through in-class assignments, design projects and independent research
  3. Group-based learning through class discussions, presentations and project works
  4. Field Trips

 

Idea of A Bird / Flower

Create forms as signals to the imagination – the idea of a bird/flower as composed of weightless atoms.

 

In Nature we find continuous structure of various kinds. It may be interesting to try and understand this aspect of nature, how these aspects are formed and how they grow, how they are deformed since an element of chance not yet clearly ascertained modifies these structures whilst they are formed. In abstraction there are forms not seen and known before. We must therefore recognize the existence of other organizing influences besides resemblances, and develop forms never seen before- absolutely new forms, not assembly of known forms that you see for the first time.

"Orchid Geometry" by Daniel Lim Yu Heng


Inspired by the orchid bud, Orchid Geometry is a form exploration seeking to portray the irony between lightness and heaviness within this organic form. As observed, the orchid bud displays qualities of rigidity, stiffness and solidness;on the other hand, it can also be seen as something that is fragile. By simplifying the form of the orchid bud, a geometric representation is achieved, bringing its aesthetic to its basic structure. The slicing and hollowing of the form reiterates the irony of light and heavy. By supporting these forms on a single slender support, the tension between the elements are further demonstrated. This play between light versus heavy, solidity versus emptiness is the main aim of the exploration, hoping to combing ironies within a form.

 

 

 

 

 


 

"The Dance" by Anchit Malhotra

 

The dance is about three dancing figures among which the "lily" - the red one is the most attractive and stands out. The figures represent celebration of life. The inspiration is drawn from the flower, 'lily' and this piece tries to make heavy light. In its attempt to make analogies to the flower, the central flowing element captures the nature of curves as seen in the lily. The weightlessness is accentuated by making a layered structure which is connected in a minimalistic way to bring out a feeling of movement and flow. The dancing figures also bring light to the movement of form and how it brings about dynamism to a static sculpture.

 

 

 

 

 

 


 

"Bigret" by Andrew Susilo Putra

 

This piece of work was inspired by the Great Egret, an egret looks so heavy when it is on ground and suddenly became so light when it is flying across the space. BiGret tries to suggest something that is heavy at the bottom but yet light on the top by making use of the perfect geometry shape. Everything in this universe is made up of perfect geometries. It's time to get back in shape, into geometric shape that is. The simple shapes that are used as the foundation for all other shapes are the square, rectangle, circle, oval or ellipse, and the triangle. Circles indicate completeness, freedom or infinity. They can be used to imply movement or security and protection. Circles and ovals are perfect attention grabbers due to their encoling natures. Circles are considered to be the most perfect of all forms and are often used to convey the ideal choice. Triangles are the most dynamic of all shapes. They can suggest growth, progress, action and movement. Due to their pointy nature, triangles are often used to indicate a direction, pointing us in the right way.

 

 

 

 

 


 

"Camomile" by Cai Baolun

 

The camomile plant's ability to grow and populate is observed and carefully reconstructed in a mechanical approach. In this industrial funk version, the basic structure of the form derives from a basic grid that is multipled throughout, thereby linking all the branches together easily much like the sturdy support found in industrial scaffoldings. A field is created from the infinite possible methods of tessellations. The 'stems' extend skywards effortlessly with solid foundation, representative of the camomile flower's silent strength to substain life and grow upwards. Lightness of the flower buds juxtaposes with the solid structure of the plant, creating a myriad field balanced with softness and solidity. An artificial representation of life is created.

 

 

 

 

 


 

Gloriosa Superba by Setho Ka Kei Angela

 

Choice of flower is Gloriosa Superba because of the unique form it has - a balance of the gentleness and the aggressive and menacing look. The petals start off with a gentle movement at the bottom and ends with sharp edges, like claws. It's got a good balance of soft and hard, and this was the characteristic that interest me the most. My ideation process, thus, follows this idea of soft and hard qualities. The choice of color is also greatly inspired by the colours of the flower, and to show movement, I have incorprated a gradient of colours thus it seems like the bottom is light.

 

 

 

 

 


 

"White Chrysanthemum" by Loo Anni

 

This project serves as an avenue for curve making - the curves of the chrysanthemum's petals, cross section and silhouette are abstracted and re-assembled to give a new three-dimensional form. Deconstructing a flower inseperable from Chinese funerary rituals is an interesting experience, as it allows you to indulge in morbid jokes while working, yet liberates you from the rigid traditional view of the flower.

 

 

 

 

 


"Abstractions and Simplifications" by Fung Kwok Pan

 

Abstractions & Simplifications is a project about reducing things to their essence, and in this case, derives its inspiration from flowers and landscape. By seeing the generic flower as a blossom on a stalk, a corresponding representation is made with a wooden cube standing on a bamboo skewer. With repetition of the same element, but with varied heights and orientations, a vision of the landscape is seen in its essential form, which is that of protrusions and valleys. Furthermore, this project represents my interest in the capabilities of the computer in generative design, that algorithms can also serve as important tools for design, alongside with sketching and visualization.
