"Swift" by Kwok Kai Hwei
Birds, in general, possess the element of light and heavy. I was inspired by the kingfisher due to its speed and agility during flight. Upon detecting a prey, it would hover around it, showing minimal movement and it eventually dives down vertically with head down first. Its body gives the impression of heaviness. However, due to its streamline body shape, it gives a tinge of lightness. Thus, the basic form of this light sculpture evolved from the body of the kingfisher. During flight, the kingfisher spread its wings wide open, allowing adequate airflow. The shape of its wings and the manner in which the feather overlay each other provides the lift, presenting its extreme swiftness. Similarly, I adopted the uniform overlayering method to cover up the form. Thin rice paper was used allowing ample light to pass through which helps to further emphasis the idea of LIGHT.
